Dryer Vent Cleaning at a glance
- Why it matters
- Lint that gets past the lint screen builds up in the vent line, reducing airflow and trapping heat next to a flammable material.
- Warning signs
- Longer drying times, a hot laundry room, a burning smell, or weak airflow at the exterior vent.
- How often
- Once a year for most homes, more often for large households or long vent runs.
- Pricing
- Quoted on request. Call (951) 488-2788.
Why dryer vents clog
The lint screen catches a lot, but not everything. The rest travels into the vent line and settles, especially in long runs, at bends and in flexible duct that has sagged or been crushed behind the dryer. A stuck or blocked exterior vent flap makes it worse. Over months and years the line narrows until air can barely move.
Signs your vent may need cleaning
- Clothes take longer to dry, or need a second cycle
- The dryer or the laundry room gets unusually hot
- Clothes come out hotter than normal
- You notice a burning smell when the dryer is running
- Lint collects around the dryer door or behind the machine
- Little or no air comes out of the exterior vent while the dryer runs
Why it matters
A restricted vent makes the dryer run longer to do the same job. It also traps heat. Lint is highly flammable, so a clogged vent is a real fire hazard. With gas dryers, a blocked vent can also cause exhaust, including carbon monoxide, to back up. Cleaning the vent is basic maintenance that reduces these risks. It is not a replacement for working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
When to schedule a cleaning
Consider having your vent cleaned if you notice any of the signs above, if you've moved into a home and don't know when it was last done, or if your household runs the dryer every day. A yearly check is a sensible routine for most homes, and more often if you do a lot of laundry.
