Most people clean the lint screen and never think about the vent line behind the dryer. But lint that gets past the screen collects in that line, and over time it can restrict airflow enough to cause problems.
1. Clothes take longer to dry
The most common sign. If a normal load now needs a second cycle, the dryer may not be able to push moist air out.
2. The dryer or laundry room gets very hot
Heat that can’t escape through the vent builds up inside the machine and the room.
3. Clothes come out hotter than usual
Another sign that hot air isn’t leaving the dryer the way it should.
4. A burning smell
Lint is highly flammable. If you smell burning while the dryer runs, stop using it and have the vent checked.
5. Lint around the door or behind the dryer
Lint that can’t go out the vent ends up where it shouldn’t.
6. Weak airflow outside
With the dryer running, check the exterior vent. You should feel a strong flow of air. If you feel little or none, or the flap is stuck, the line may be blocked.
What to do
Clean the lint screen every load, keep the area behind the dryer clear, and make sure the exterior flap opens freely. For the vent line itself, especially long runs through walls or the roof, schedule a professional dryer vent cleaning. Once a year is a sensible routine for most homes.
